1981 proposed changes to the BOCA basic codes book

The publication of the codes is BOCA's most important function. Listed below is a sample of some of the codes and related standards available in the NYSL collection. Earlier Canadian building code adoptions are dated as follows: The first National Building Code of Canada NBC was published in ; subsequent editions were published in,, and The plans are subject to review for compliance with current building codes as part of the permit application process.

This term replaces the term "handicapped" handicapped parking, handicapped restroom which is generally found to be derogatory. It also applies to the alteration, change of use and demolition of existing buildings.

It also deals with special needs, such as hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons where evacuating people may have special requirements. Within one year, the BOCA code had been adopted by fifty cities.

Many of the older building and construction codes have been digitized and made available through the Library's Digital collections.

Plumbing requirements were included in all editions of the NBC up until when they were published as a separate Code. This includes maneuvering from public transportation, building entry, parking spaces, elevators, and restrooms. The words "non combustible" were changed to "ferrous metal" to describe the damper material and the proposal was approved.

A change in use usually changes the applicability of code requirements and as such, will subject the building to review for compliance with the currently applicable codes refer to SectionChange of Occupancy, International Building Code — For more information on these items or other standards available at the NYSL, call the Reference Desk at or send an email to refserv nysed.

BOCA encourages cities and states to adopt uniform building codes, and promotes competence and professionalism in the enforcement of those codes. Existing buildings are not exempt from new requirements, with the IBC publishing a Building Code for existing buildings.

The organization also publishes manuals, textbooks, and periodicals for its members. Membership BOCA's membership consists largely of cities, towns, and government agencies.

Separate volumes cover general construction, mechanical systems, plumbing, fire prevention, energy conservation, and other areas. California has also enacted a specific historic building code see California Historic Building Code.
